The Holy See has reaffirmed its opposition to the testing of nuclear weapons at the UN, emphasising the long-lasting effects on communities. Counsellor and Chargé d'Affaires at the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations, Mgr Robert Murphy, called for a “shared responsibility in protecting present and future generations from its enduring consequences.”
Speaking on September 1, International Day Against Nuclear Tests, Mgr Murphy said the suffering caused by the lingering effects of nuclear tests “should have reinforced the common conviction that peace cannot be preserved by developing ever more destructive weapons.”
