terms of service
These terms govern your use of The Catholic Herald website, newsletters and subscriptions. Please read them; they set out what you can expect from us and what we ask of you. If you have a question about any of them, write to us.
Who we are
The Catholic Herald website, newsletters, subscriptions and printed magazine are provided by Catholic Herald Limited, registered in England and Wales under company number 00288446, registered office 4th Floor, Aquis House, Blagrave Street, Reading RG1 1PL. You can contact us at subscriptions@thecatholicherald.com. These terms were last updated on 23 September 2026.
By using the site or buying a subscription you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. Nothing in them affects the rights the law gives you as a consumer.
Accounts
A free account lets you read a limited number of articles each thirty days and sign up for newsletters. You must give us accurate details, keep your password to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else is using your account. An account is for one person; sharing sign-in details is not permitted. We may close accounts that break these terms.
Subscriptions and payment
- We sell digital subscriptions (billed monthly or yearly), print and digital subscriptions, Magnificat, gift subscriptions and institutional access. What each includes is set out on the subscribe page at the time you buy.
- Prices are shown in pounds sterling or US dollars and include VAT where it applies. The price you pay is the one shown at checkout.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period at the then-current price, and you authorise us to charge your payment method each time. If we change the price of your plan we will email you at least thirty days before the renewal it applies to, so you can cancel first.
- Introductory offers are for new subscribers, one per household, and revert to the standard price when the offer period ends, as stated when you buy.
- The printed magazine is posted to the address you give us; Magnificat is delivered to UK addresses only. Tell us promptly if an issue does not arrive and we will send a replacement where we can.
- Institutional and group subscriptions are governed by the agreement made with the institution.
Cancelling and refunds
- You can cancel online at any time at thecatholicherald.com/account. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for. There is no minimum term beyond that period.
- If you are a consumer, you have the right to cancel within fourteen days of buying a new subscription and receive a refund. Because digital access starts immediately, we may deduct an amount for the part of the period you have used. Printed magazines already dispatched are not refundable.
- After the fourteen days, payments already taken are not refunded, except where we have failed to provide what you paid for or the law requires it.
- If a payment fails we will retry it and email you. If it still fails, your subscription is paused until it is settled.
Gift subscriptions
A gift subscription is paid for in full by the giver at the time of purchase. We tell the recipient by email on the day the giver chooses, and the subscription runs for its term from that day and does not renew. The recipient needs an account in their own name to read. The giver may cancel within fourteen days of purchase for a refund, provided the gift has not yet started; once it has started it cannot be refunded except where the law requires. We will not knowingly sell a gift to someone who already subscribes; if that happens, contact us and we will put it right.
Using our content
Everything we publish, including articles, photographs, illustrations, video, audio, design and the Catholic Herald name and masthead, belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by copyright and trade mark law. You may read and print it for your own personal, non-commercial use. You may not copy, republish, distribute, scrape or use it to train artificial intelligence systems without our written permission. For syndication or reprint requests, contact us.
What you may not do
- Share sign-in details or use technical means to get around the paywall or the free-article limit.
- Interfere with the site, probe its security, or place unreasonable load on it.
- Post or send anything unlawful, defamatory, abusive or in breach of another person's rights.
- Impersonate anyone, or misrepresent your connection with The Catholic Herald.
We may suspend or end access for anyone who does.
Letters and contributions
If you send us a letter, comment or other material for publication, you give us the right to publish, edit and archive it in print, online and in any other medium, and you confirm that it is your own work and does not infringe anyone else's rights. We may decline to publish anything.
Other websites and embedded content
We link to other websites and embed video from YouTube. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content, their terms or their handling of your information.
Availability and changes
We try to keep the site available at all times but cannot promise it, and we may change, suspend or withdraw parts of it. If we withdraw a service you have paid for, we will refund the unused part of your subscription.
Our liability
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Otherwise, we are not liable for loss that was not a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms, for loss connected with a business, or for loss caused by events outside our reasonable control, and our total liability to you in any twelve-month period is limited to the amount you paid us in that period. Our journalism is provided for information; it is not professional, legal, financial or medical advice.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction over any dispute. If you live in Scotland, Northern Ireland or the European Union you may also rely on the consumer protections and courts of your own country.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we do we will change the date at the top and, for changes that affect an existing subscription, email subscribers before they take effect. Continuing to use the site after that means you accept the new terms.
