A bishop, seven Trappist monks and 11 other religious men and women killed by extremists in Algeria in the 1990s will be beatified on December 8, according to the Algerian bishops.

Mgr Pierre Claverie and Companions will be beatified during a ceremony at the Basilica of Santa Cruz in the Algerian city of Oran on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Cardinal Giovanni Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, will represent Pope Francis ceremony.

The Algerian bishops described the event as a “great joy”. "May their example help us in our life today," the bishops added. This beatification will be a call for the Church and the world to "build together a world of peace and fraternity”.

Pope Francis officially recognised the monks as martyrs in January this year.
