A Colombian bishop has urged continued support after media attention fades for the more than 200,000 people affected by the August 10 earthquake in the country. More than 300 have died as a result of the disaster, with thousands wounded in what is one of the strongest earthquakes in the country’s recorded history.
Bishop Juan Carlos Barreto Barreto of Soacha, president of Caritas Colombia, told Vatican News that the community was “very grateful and very encouraged” for the response received so far, but stated that “we have to persevere in this commitment to help, which must be sustained over time”.
