As Ebola spreads across the Democratic Republic of Congo, ongoing conflict in the country's east is preventing health workers from reaching vulnerable communities and threatening efforts to contain the deadly virus.
Father Olivier Ndondo, Provincial Superior of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in the DRC and Uganda, told Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) that the country is facing a new outbreak of the disease, which first emerged in 1976.
While authorities have acted quickly to diagnose cases, trace contacts and prevent further transmission, the situation is far more challenging in the conflict-ridden east.
