The elevation of the Bishop of San Diego, rather than the Archbishop of San Francisco, to cardinal this summer demonstrates the extent to which Pope Francis is shaping the College of Cardinals to choose a successor reflecting his legacy should he resign or die in the near-term. But it also shines a light on the divide among US Catholics, whose interpretation of the faith is being filtered through the culture wars tearing US society apart. Not that such culture wars are non-existent elsewhere in the Western world but they are their most combustible in the country where they originated.
