Tennessee suspended all remaining executions in 2026 after a woman survived two separate doses of lethal injection and was taken to hospital after a two-and-a-half-hour ordeal.

“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the state’s most serious responsibilities,” said Gov Bill Lee of Tennessee in a statement following the attempted execution. “The people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective.”

Tennessee had one additional execution scheduled for 2026.
