Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but going to Mass, at which ashes are imposed, is strongly encouraged. It’s also a day of abstinence – no meat – and fasting: one meal is permitted, plus a maximum of two snacks which together do not add up to a full meal.

Flame, the UK’s largest Catholic youth event, returns to Wembley Arena on Saturday, March 2. There will be Adoration, music, theatre and speakers, including Cardinal Vincent Nichols and an exclusive video talk from Jean Vanier of L’Arche.

At 7.30pm on Saturday, March 2, St Bede’s Church, Clapham Park, London, will be screening a new film entitled A Time to Revive: Rebuilding the Catholic Faith Today. It lasts 40 minutes and includes interviews with Bishop Mark Davies of Shrewsbury (left) and Cardinal Raymond Burke. The film draws on Catholic history to suggest answers to the crises inside and outside the Church.
