The week ahead: Memorial Day, Marian pilgrimage, and saint on stage

Monday May 27 is Memorial Day in the United States, a federal holiday which always falls on the last Monday of May. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service. Thousands of priests and bishops will celebrate Memorial Day Masses in cemeteries to pray for the dead. The Masses, some of which are outdoors, usually begin at 10am.

Tomorrow, Saturday May 25, is the annual East Anglia Children’s Pilgrimage to Walsingham. Last year more than 400 children and adults made the journey to the Norfolk village, Britain’s best-known Marian pilgrimage site.

From Wednesday May 29 to Saturday June 1, the Lantern Theatre, Brighton, will be showing a one-man play about St Damien of Molokai (above). Damien, starring Daniel Finlay, tells the story of the Belgian priest who cared for lepers. It was originally written by Aldyth Morris in 1976, and the new production has received positive reviews.
