The Traditional Latin Mass will no longer be celebrated in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Diocese of Tyler in Texas. The move was confirmed in a letter from Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, the apostolic administrator of the diocese, following guidance from the Holy See.
The diocese was previously led by Bishop Joseph Strickland, who was removed from his office as bishop of the Diocese of Tyler by Pope Francis in November 2023 after refusing to resign. As bishop, he had been an outspoken critic of the Holy Father's actions around celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass, including accusing him of “undermining the Deposit of Faith”.
