When asked by a reporter to consider his legacy in the Archdiocese of Boston following the news of his retirement, Cardinal Seán O’Malley gave a slight smile and said he hasn’t thought about it, before crediting any legacy of his to those who have supported him and the Church’s mission for the last 20-plus years.
Nationally, however, after the Vatican confirmed that it had accepted the cardinal’s retirement and that Bishop Richard Henning of Providence will succeed O’Malley, tributes poured in from secular and Catholic leaders commending O’Malley for his work to advance the mission of the local, national and global Church.
