One of the more extraordinary aspects of the downfall of Justin Welby, who has resigned as Archbishop of Canterbury over safeguarding failures, has been the way in which a lone woman bishop broke the enforced silence of her colleagues in the face of the mounting public wave of protests.
Mr Welby admitted to his incompetence during a recent interview on Channel 4, with Cathy Newman. Newman accused him of a cover-up; he denied it. She said the circumstances required that he chose between either a cover-up or incompetence. He admitted incompetence. The die of public judgement was cast.
