With Pope Francis now embarked on his trip to Luxembourg and Belgium, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin set the stage and alluded to what's at stake when he spoke out about how Europe is forgetting its roots and thereby losing its way.
This unmooring, which includes an apparent determination to jettison Europe's Catholic past, risks the continent repeating the "tragic errors" of the past, the cardinal warns.
Pope Francis arrived in Luxembourg on Thursday 26 September and will return from Belgium on 29 September. The two small nations are central to the European Union, and ahead of the trip Parolin told Vatican Media he hopes the Pope’s visit “becomes a precious opportunity for Europe to rediscover its foundational values".
