Cardinal Vincent Nichols has congratulated Theresa May on her imminent appointment as Prime Minister.

In a letter, the Archbishop of Westminster said he was "only too aware of the magnitude of the undertaking" the new Prime Minister was accepting.

"I assure you of my prayers and those of the Catholic Community in England and Wales," he added.

On Tuesday, David Cameron chaired his final cabinet meeting as prime minister before May takes over on Wednesday. A nine-week Conservative leadership race had just begun, but May's rival Andrea Leadsom withdrew on Monday.
