Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin has expressed his concern that there are countries which “want to go it alone” in regard to new AI technologies. The cardinal made the remarks at the Faith and Reason in the Age of Artificial Intelligence conference on 16 September, which was held at the Italian parliament.
Cardinal Parolin appealed to those involved to “stop and genuinely reflect on what the consequences of artificial intelligence and its use might be”. Responding to recent calls for AI regulation by those within the industry, including by companies which create large language models (LLMs), he said: “We hope that it is ethical reasoning that drives this kind of consideration.”
