"What work will you do?" (John 6:30)
In yesterday's Gospel, this question from the crowd is galling: Jesus has just multiplied loaves and fish to feed five thousand and they want yet another sign!
But it also reveals their own attitude to God: they mistakenly think that they must first of all do things for God rather than receive from him primarily.
After Jesus has described a food that endures to eternal life, they do not ask about this food, but immediately express their activist attitude: "What must we do if we are to do the works that God wants?" (6:28).
