On Sunday October 16, on a beautiful sunny day, 45 members of St Mary’s Cathedral parish in Wrexham walked five miles from Ruabon to the city’s cathedral for a Mass marking the feast day of St Richard Gwyn. The group, which included a large number of young people from the parish youth group and this year’s Confirmation group, followed the Wat’s Dyke footpath through the picturesque countryside and through the Erddig Park estate. Mgr Peter Brignall gave a blessing for all those who had joined in the walk and the Mass concluded with an opportunity for all present to venerate the relic of St Richard Gwyn, which is housed at the cathedral, and accessible by visitors throughout the year. It is hoped that in future years an invitation might be extended to neighbouring parishes to join in this new pilgrimage walk in honour of the local Reformation martyr. St Richard Gwyn was a schoolmaster in the area who, rather than accept the imposition of the Oath of Allegiance under the reign of Elizabeth I, underwent an extended period of persecution, before ultimately being condemned to being hung, drawn and quartered in the Beast Market in Wrexham town.
