A new German lay organisation has written an open letter to Pope Leo XIV urging him to stop an official recognition of the Synodal Way, arguing that it is an attempt to alter the hierarchical constitution of the Church.
The movement, Pro Fide Ecclesiae (PFE), was formed on July 12 and said it aims to “defend the Faith against heretical interpretations and falsifications”.
The German Synodal Way, which was separate from the Synod on Synodality initiated by Pope Francis, launched in 2019, and has sparked continued controversy due to its series of conferences which entertained and voted in favour of a number of positions contrary to the Church’s teaching and discipline – including women’s ordination, revoking the requirement for priestly celibacy in the Latin Rite and a contrary interpretation of sexual ethics.
