"When the Advocate comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who issues from the Father, he will be my witness." (John 15:26)
In John’s Gospel, Jesus four times calls the Holy Spirit the "Paraclete", a name which first means "Advocate", or even "Defence Lawyer", but can also be translated as "Counsellor" or "Comforter". John also applies a legal name to the devil, who is called the "accuser" (Revelation 12:10).
As well as giving him this name, Jesus describes the actions of the Holy Spirit in terms of a judicial trial. He will "bear witness" to Jesus (15:26) and "convince" the world of sin, righteousness and judgement (16:8): "of sin, because they do not believe in me; of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged" (John 16:9-11).
