Pope Francis called for an end to war and for national unity in Iraq in yesterday's Angelus address (full text, full video). The Pope conferred the pallium on 24 metropolitan archbishops at a Mass on the feast of Ss Peter and Paul (full text, full video). Communists "have stolen our flag" of concern for the poor, Francis has said in an interview with Il Messaggero (original text). The South Korean government is reportedly "very concerned" about the Pope's security in August after Francis condemned the mafia. The council of eight cardinals will begin their fifth meeting with the Pope on Tuesday. John Allen says the cardinals shouldn't delay announcing which Vatican departments will be "downsized". And musician Sir Elton John has praised Francis for "his humanity and taking everything down to the humility of faith". Follow me on Twitter @lukecoppen for updates throughout the day.
