A German-based Catholic campus apostolate is preparing to send missionaries to universities across Europe. Ardens, a non-profit association operating out from Bonn, Germany, will deploy four full-time missionary teams after summer 2026 to campus chaplaincies in Cork, Belfast, Passau and Vienna, as well as online support to students across 10 other countries.
David Hickson, chief executive of Ardens, said: "The name Ardens is the Latin word for 'burning' or 'on fire,' drawing directly from the Road to Emmaus narrative in Luke 24:32. Just as the discouraged disciples felt their hearts burning within them upon recognising Jesus, our missionaries meet European students where they are. In university environments, Ardens fans the flame of personal encounter with Christ, transforming searching and drifting hearts into passionate servant leaders."
The apostolate’s approach involved meeting students, developing their prayer life through mentorship before “empowering and training students to lead their own peer small groups at the university and in their parishes after graduation.”
At the invitation of local bishops, Ardens operates as a specific outreach designed to enhance existing Catholic campus chaplaincies rather than replace them. The missionaries work to develop communities by organising small-group Bible studies and hosting retreats.
The organisation, made up of lay missionaries serving alongside existing institutions, launched on June 20. In a statement following its launch, it said: “The mission has always belonged to the local Church. As the work on European campuses has grown – across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Germany, and Austria – it has become clearer that it should be governed, funded, and resourced from within Europe itself.”
Ardens developed from FOCUS Europe, the European arm of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students.
“With the encouragement of FOCUS leadership in the United States, the European team has established Ardens as a locally governed European missionary organisation, on European soil, in partnership with the dioceses we serve,” it said.
