A Synod on Synodality study group has called for an amendment to Canon Law which would see the legal definition of infallibility extended to include the “entire body of the Christian faithful”, in a move a prominent canonist has argued would be an aberration in teaching.

The latest publication from the Synod on Synodality is the report produced by the Canonical Commission, one of the many small groups established to examine particular questions which arose during the multi-year synod.

Released on September 30, the Canonical Commission’s final report seeks to align the synodal style with the Church’s canonical modus operandi. According to the Commission, the report examines how the “theological and ecclesiological insights emerging from the synodal process may be translated into canonical norms”.
