Earlier this month we watched the eightieth anniversary celebrations of the D-Day landings. The pictures were particularly poignant because it is the last time a significant anniversary will be attended by veterans who were actually present. We owe it to them and to all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to never forget what they were fighting for – freedom.
It’s easy to be flippant or cynical about politicians and elections. We only value democracy once we’ve lost it – and then it’s too late. Most of those involved in national or local government are principled individuals, they want to make a difference for the better. If there are other types, then we are fortunate to have the opportunity to vote them out.
