This month’s Saints of the Ordinary series continues this week with several wartime martyrs, Blessed Nikolaus Gross, Blessed Natalia Tułasiewicz and St Peter To Rot. The latter, from Papua New Guinea, died at the hands of the Japanese for refusing to renege on his Catholic marriage vows. The Credible Witness this month (see page 356) is Pedro Ballester, a member of Opus Dei who died at 21 from bone cancer, which he bore with remarkable heroism. Such figures all remind us of the reality of suffering and the way Christ transforms it in all its forms into occasions of grace.
