Archbishop Gabriele Caccia has been appointed apostolic nuncio to the United States.
Announced by the Vatican on March 7, the decision by Pope Leo to entrust the Milan-born prelate with the post follows the retirement of Cardinal Christophe Pierre, who stepped down upon reaching the age of 80 after nearly a decade in Washington.
Archbishop Caccia acknowledged the weight of the appointment, saying he felt “honoured and deeply humbled by the decision of the Holy Father” and describing the task as a “mission at the service of communion and peace”.
The archbishop said he accepted the responsibility with both “joy and a sense of trepidation”, recognising the expectations that accompany such a role.
The appointment was widely welcomed by the American hierarchy. Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, greeted the announcement warmly and pledged cooperation with the new envoy. “On behalf of my brother bishops, I wish to extend our warmest welcome and our prayerful support to him as he carries out his responsibilities across the United States,” he said, adding that the bishops looked forward to working with him in the years ahead.
Archbishop Caccia arrives in Washington with considerable experience. Born in Milan on February 24, 1958, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1983 by the influential Jesuit archbishop Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini. His early years of ministry were spent in parish work before he was sent to Rome to study at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, the training ground for Vatican diplomats. After completing his studies and joining the Holy See’s diplomatic service in 1991, he was assigned to Tanzania, beginning a career that would eventually span several continents.
He was consecrated bishop on September 12, 2009, by Pope Benedict XVI. On September 12, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him apostolic nuncio to the Philippines. In 2019 he became the Holy See’s permanent observer to the United Nations.
The timing of the appointment is also notable. It comes in the year in which the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding. Archbishop Caccia referred to the anniversary in his remarks, invoking God’s blessing upon the country as it commemorates the milestone.
The appointment also comes at a moment of considerable political tension within the United States. The country remains deeply polarised, with divisions emerging over recent foreign policy decisions and immigration issues, particularly following the countries involvement in military strikes against Iran that has triggered a wider conflict in the Middle East.
