If demography and culture are destiny, then the Vatican – and wider Christian community - have a serious problem, in the Western world at least. The German Synodal Path may be an attempt at liberal pushback against what many German Catholics see as an alienating conservativism by the Vatican, but it faces an uphill struggle to win over lapsed Catholics in a culture and society which has largely turned against the faith. Germany is not alone. The Pope - currently on a pilgrimage of penance in Canada - is unlikely to reverse the remorseless decline of the Catholic faith in that country as well.
