Italian terrorism investigators have said that a group of al-Qaeda suspects arrested this week may have been planning an attack on the Vatican. Cagliari chief prosecutor Mauro Mura told Italian media that the group of 18 suspects also planned attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to Reuters. The Islamic State has made numerous threats to attack Rome, with one propaganda document showing the black flag of jihad flying over St Peter’s. Earlier this year extra troops were posted around Rome after reports of a terrorism threat.
