Suspected suicide bombers have struck three churches in Indonesia, killing at least 10 people. Scores more were injured in the attacks in Surabaya, the capital of East Java province. Attackers targeted Santa Maria Catholic Church, the Indonesian Christian Church and the Pentecost Central Church. The explosion at Santa Maria killed four people and two people were killed at each of the other two locations. A further two people died later in hospital. Santa Maria was the first site to be attacked, at 7.30 am local time on Sunday. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Reuters quoted Wawan Purwanto, communication director at Indonesia's intelligence agency, as saying that the ISIS-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah was likely to be behind the bombings. The US Embassy in Jakarta condemned the atrocities. "These attacks on peaceful worshipers are an affront to the tolerance and diversity embraced by Indonesians,’ it said. ‘The United States stands with the people of Indonesia, and we offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.”
