As the second week of the Synod on Synodality continues, an article published in La Civiltà Cattolica on 8 October has revealed more of Pope Francis’s vision of the role of synodality in the Catholic Church today. It also highlights some of the inherent tensions between the use of synods and the power of the papacy in modern Catholicism.
The article recounts the Pope's meeting on 28 September with 150 of his fellow Jesuits in Brussels, during his recent visit to Belgium, when Francis discussed how Eastern Christians have not lost synodality, while Western Catholics “have lost it".
