Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, one of the four cardinals who submitted the ‘dubia’ to Pope Francis, has died. The cardinal served as Archbishop of Bologna for 11 years from 2004 to 2015, and was created Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. Cardinal Caffarra was one of four – along with Cardinals Joachim Meisner, Walter Brandmüller and Raymond Leo Burke – who presented the ‘dubia’ to Pope Francis asking him to clear up controversies surrounding Amoris Laetitia. His death comes just two months after that of Cardinal Meisner, leaving just two living ‘dubia’ cardinals. In June, it was revealed the four cardinals had sought an audience with the Pope after he failed to answer their questions, but did not receive a response.
