Cardinal Mauro Gambetti has been removed as cardinal archpriest of the Vatican and named by the Pope to become the archbishop of Chieti-Vasto.
As anticipated, Cardinal Gambetti was announced as the incoming bishop of the Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto on October 3, thus seeing the Franciscan cardinal leave his post as Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica. The move has been much rumoured for many months, with sources providing final confirmation about it in recent days.
Gambetti will replace the 77-year old Archbishop Bruno Forte who has led the archdiocese since 2004, though no replacement for Gambetti has yet been named.
