I enjoy the kind of fast food that is decried as unhealthy, and generally take no notice of the dire warnings that are thrown at me. Is it a sin to enjoy my favourite burger and fries? Weakened by our fallen human nature, we do have to exercise restraint in our use of food and drink, not over-indulging or causing ourselves harm. In this respect, fast food is the same as any other food. One person might use it in a greedy and irresponsible way, while another is simply avoiding being fastidious by having a quick burger and then getting on with some good work. It is a Christian thing to exercise some self-denial when we eat, whether by denying ourselves something we desire, or by eating food that is not our first choice. This is not to reject the goodness of God’s providence but to eat as human persons rather than animals. Since God gave us life, and asks us to work for His glory, we have a duty to look after our physical health, while always giving greater attention to the condition of our spiritual life. Advice on what is healthy food varies among “experts” and so we are entitled to make a reasonable judgment for ourselves about a balanced diet, always keeping concerns about eating in their proper and secondary place in our lives. Living in a culture that rejects the supernatural and thrashes around for alternative ways of being fulfilled, we must not allow food to become our god or our demon.
