A Catholic man has decided to attend all Masses at a cathedral in south London for a week next month to raise money for Rethink Mental Illness. Stephen Salmon, 50, will raise money for charity by attending Mass every day at St George’s Cathedral in Southwark, south London, from Monday, March 12 to Sunday, March 18. Mr Salmon, who lives in Raynes Park in south London, was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 26. He says that Rethink Mental Illness has helped him enormously. “Since been diagnosed, this charity has been very supportive and reassuring,” he says. “It has helped me in practical ways by organising activities that stretch me and help me deal with mental illness. “I’m also a practising Catholic so I thought of a way of raising money for charity by doing something that I actually enjoy. “By raising money this way I hope to help charities and also show people suffering from mental illness that there are things we can do to improve our lives.” Mr Salmon hopes to raise £500, which will be evenly split between Rethink Mental Illness and the Wimbledon Guild of Social Welfare.
