St Ambrose Preparatory School has welcomed local people who lived through the Second World War to a concert celebrating Britain’s finest hour. Boys at the independent Catholic preparatory school in Hale Barns, Altrincham, sang a selection of Home Front favourites including “White Cliffs of Dover”, “The Lambeth Walk” and “We’ll Meet Again”. Nearly 100 elderly people enjoyed tea and home-made cakes as they joined in with the singalong. Irene Wright, 87, said: “I’m just glad they didn’t serve the dried egg we used to get in the war. It was horrible, but this was a wonderful afternoon, and the boys’ singing brought back so many memories.” Her friend Dorothy Heywood, 78, added: “As a seven-year-old, I remember having to rush to the air raid shelters in Timperley. It was frightening but also quite exciting.”
