A community-funded excavation on the island of Lismore in Scotland has made “hugely exciting” discoveries which could reframe the importance of St Moluag to medieval Gaelic Catholicism. Lismore had been the home of a monastery dating to the sixth century, founded by St Moluag, though the recent excavation suggests the site was of far greater importance than was previously thought.
Excavators compared the discoveries, which included burial grounds and decorated stonework, to the site of Iona, once the centre of Catholicism in Scotland.
