Foreign Minister Baroness Anelay will visit the Holy See today to mark the centenary of diplomatic relations being re-established. The Minister of State will attend the celebratory Mass at the Papal Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls, which will celebrated by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Cardinal Secretary of State. She will also hold talks with senior Vatican officials about the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and modern slavery, on top of other issues. Baroness Anelay said she was “delighted” to be representing the government on this anniversary. “The visit is an important occasion to further strengthen the UK’s engagement with the Holy See on a range of issues of mutual concern, and to consider ways in which our networks might work more closely together, from human trafficking and freedom of religion and belief, to wider human rights issues and international development.” Also on the trip will be Baroness Berridge, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Freedom of Religion and Belief, was also part of the official delegation.
