Historic Virginia basilica reopens after 4-year restoration
The basilica dates back to 1858, when the current church was built to replace one that burned down. St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception is the only Black Catholic community church that is also a basilica, and is the "cornerstone of Catholicism" in the Virginia Tidewater.
