There have been many crises in the history of the Herald, but one of the worst was in 1954 when there was a national printers’ strike. When it looked like our then-weekly paper wouldn’t get printed in time to reach parishes for Sunday Mass, divine intervention by way of an independent printer provided a solution at the eleventh hour for Michael de la Bédoyère, editor from 1934 to 1962. His son Stephen remembers the drama as when he got into trouble at school that week, the headmaster gave him a hundred lines to write out: “The Catholic Herald always comes out on time.”
