Local policeman Sergeant Bede McCabe was recently honoured by his fellow parishioners at St Aloysius Hebburn, Tyneside, for being awarded an MBE. Sgt McCabe was named in the New Year Honours List and received an MBE for services to policing on March 10 from Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Sgt McCabe was accompanied by his mother, Doreen McCabe. Being awarded the MBE was not the first time Sgt McCabe has been honoured for his work. Since joining the Northumbria police force Sgt McCabe has also been awarded the High Sheriff’s Cup twice for his contribution to policing in the community. Fr Martin Morris, the parish priest, celebrated a Thanksgiving Mass for Sgt McCabe on March 19 at St Aloysius, the church he attends regularly. Fr Morris presented Sgt McCabe with a letter and a blessing from Bishop Séamus Cunningham of Hexam and Newcastle, congratulating him on the honour. Following Mass Sgt McCabe and his family were joined by Fr Morris, Fr Ogbuanu, Fr Donnelly and fellow parishioners in the church hall to celebrate his award. When Sgt McCabe’s honour was announced last winter, Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jim Campbell of the Northumbria Police said: “This award is an acknowledgement of the significant contribution Bede McCabe has made to Northumbria Police and the communities he serves. “We are all pleased for him and grateful his hard work has been recognised in this way.”
