Cafod hosted a parliamentary event called Tea Time for Change at Westminster earlier this month, in order to place social justice high on the political agenda. Some 131 MPs attended the event, meeting constituents over a cup of tea to listen to their concerns. Cafod was supported by other charities including Oxfam and Action Aid and some 1,200 campaigners were present from all corners of the world. After an ecumenical service Cafod director Chris Bain welcomed supporters to the event. “Today,” he said, “is our opportunity to demonstrate to Westminster that, in the face of a financial crisis, there is a community within the UK that will continue to stand up for the world’s poorest people – and we’re here to stay.” Cafod described the day as a “real success”, with voices of people who are passionate about poverty having really reached the ears of their representatives.
