A new machine developed in Switzerland to facilitate assisted suicide and used recently by an American woman represents an "abominable" development, an English bishop has warned. The device runs the risk of becoming a “glorified gas chamber” that encourages suicide and leads to many more deaths by suicide.
A 64-year-old American woman ended her life using the 3D-printed suicide device called a “Sarco Pod” on 23 September in Merishausen, Switzerland.
The inventor of the device, Australian Doctor Philip Nitschke, said it was “an idyllic peaceful death in a Swiss forest” in a post on the social media platform X. News reports indicate that he watched the death on an internet feed.
