Last week the European Court of Human Rights ruled that a German man, who was banned from distributing leaflets outside an abortion clinic, had had his right to freedom of expression violated. The court ruled that Klau Gunter Annem was entitled to distribute the leaflets outside the clinic, which compared the scale of abortions in the country to the Holocaust. Gregor Puppinck, director of the Strasbourg-based European Centre for Law and Justice, which intervened in Annen’s case described it as a moral victory, saying: “It really upholds the freedom of speech for pro-life activists in Europe.” How significant is this ruling for Germany and the rest of Europe?
