Michelle McManus, winner of the 2003 series of the television show Pop Idol, will sing for the Pope when he visits Scotland, the Church has announced. She is expected to perform before the start of the papal Mass in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow, and it is also hoped that Susan Boyle, winner of Britain’s Got Talent, will sing. Miss McManus presents a topical programme on Scottish television called The Hour. She will sing a composition written by her cousin Michael. The performance will be part of the pre-Mass entertainment programme. The Church in Scotland announced that it was delighted that Miss McManus was joining the event, which thousands of people will attend. A spokesman for the Church said: “It is a fantastic addition to what should be a wonderful day. It is a very historic event and I am sure it will be a tremendous event attended by thousands and watched by millions. It is a great opportunity for Scotland to show what a welcoming country it is to the world.” The capacity for the event is 100,000.
