Pope Francis has made two episcopal appointments, naming Archbishop Michel Aupetit as new Archbishop of Paris, and Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes as new Archbishop of Mexico City. Archbishop Aupetit, who is currently Archbishop of Nanterre, is a former medical doctor and bioethicist, and serves as president of the “Family and Society” council on the French Bishops’ Conference. He succeeds Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, who is retiring for age reasons. Cardinal Aguiar is currently Archbishop of Tlalnepantla, just north of Mexico City. He served as president of the Mexican Bishops’ Conference from 2006 to 2012, and as president of CELAM (the Latin American Episcopal Conference) from 2011 to 2015. Pope Francis made him a cardinal in 2016. He is also a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America in the Roman Curia. He succeeds Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera as head of the world’s largest diocese.
