Pope Francis has said the British decision to leave the European Union leaves a "great responsibility" for all of us to help ensure the "peaceful co-existence" of Europe and the "good of the people of the United Kingdom".

The Pope, speaking on-board the papal flight to Armenia only hours after the result came in, said the vote for Brexit was "the will expressed by the people".

He told reporters: "This requires a great responsibility on the part of all of us to guarantee the good of the people of the United Kingdom as well as the peaceful coexistence of the entire European continent. This is what I expect."
