Pope Francis’s favourite football team San Lorenzo will meet Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup final. The Buenos Aires team beat New Zealand’s Auckland City 2-1 in the semi-finals last night, winning 2-1 in extra-time. The Argentine side were in the eight-team tournament in Morroco as the representatives of South America, having this summer won the Copa Libertadores, South America’s most prestigious competition for the first time in their 106-year competition, and were heavily tipped to beat the champions of Oceania. Pablo Barrientos put San Lorenzo ahead in just before half time before Angela Berlanga equalised for the Kiwis. Substitute Mauro Matos scored the winner four minutes into extra-time. The final with Real Madrid will take place on Saturday in Marrakesh. Pope Francis has supported the team since he was a boy and in September it was announced that the club would name their new stadium after him.
