Pupils at Margaret Roper Catholic primary school, Purley, Surrey, enjoyed taking part in a series of primary schools’ cross-country races organised by the South London Harriers (SLH) at Oasis Academy, Coulsdon. These races took place in November, January and March. Four teams were fielded by Margaret Roper, with Year 3/4 girls and boys, and Year 5/6 girls and boys running at each meet. Overall Margaret Roper was the winning team in the Y 3/4 girls and Y 5/6 boys categories, with individual place trophies going to Anabel Quartly, 2nd Y 3/4 Girls and Conor Murray, 1st Y 5/6 boys. There were strong individual performances throughout the team, with the Year 5/6 boys particularly dominant in their races. Margaret Roper cross-country team trains twice weekly before school and has developed a strong tradition of success in cross-country. Some of the older children also train with the SLH. The children thoroughly enjoy their running and train very hard, turning up even when the weather is icy and cold. Some parents have also started running in the mornings to keep fit and encourage their children. When the children complete sufficient laps of the school circuit over the year they are awarded a “marathon medal” to recognise their achievement.
