The Prince of Wales sampled Ampleforth Abbey Cider during a visit to the Great North Yorkshire Show last week. Prince Charles attended the show last Tuesday with the Duchess of Cornwall and while visiting the Ampleforth Abbey stall he spoke to the prior of the monastic community, Fr Terence Richardson OSB. The Prince then tasted some of the cider which is brewed from the Abbey’s own orchard, the largest commercial orchard in the north of England. The stall also had on offer Ampleforth’s Dubbel beer, which is produced in conjunction with local brewery Little Valley Brewery. Derived from a 17th century recipe in the Belgian Trappist style, Ampleforth Abbey Beer has sold well since launching in 2012, winning numerous awards including 'Yorkshire’s Best Drink'. Profits from the sale of Ampleforth’s produce go towards supporting the monastic community, its charitable works and ensuring the stewardship of the 2,000 acres of grounds in an 'area of outstanding natural beauty' in north Yorkshire. The Great North Yorkshire Show ran from July 12-14 in Harrogate.
