A rape victim who wrote to Pope Francis about her ordeal received a surprise phone call from him on Sunday. Alejandra Pereyra, 44, said she felt “touched by the hand of God” after speaking to the Pope for about half an hour. Ms Pereyra, an Argentine, said in a letter to the Pope that she had been raped by a policeman but that authorities had tried to suppress her complaint. “The Pope listened to what I said with much attention,” she said. “He told me that I was not alone and that I must have faith in the justice system. He told me that he receives thousands of letters a day but that the one that I wrote had touched his heart.” Last week Francis made a surprise call to an Italian student who had written to him describing his life and career hopes. Stefano Cabizza, 19, an IT student, said: “I couldn’t believe it. We laughed and joked for about eight minutes. He called me around five o’clock after finding that I was not at home the first time around.”
