A helicopter delivering aid from Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish government to Yazidi refugees stranded in the Sinjar mountains in northern Iraq crashed earlier today, killing the pilot and injuring other passengers, according to a report on state-run Iraqia TV. The Iraqi military has said "technical failure" was responsible for the crash of the MI-17 helicopter. According to the New York Times, the helicopter, which had delivered humanitarian aid and picked up a group of Yazidis, crashed shortly after take off. A Kurdish regional government official said that the refugees and the other survivors of the crash, including journalists, were picked up by two rescue helicopters and taken to the city of Dohuk, near Irbil, the Kurdish regional capital.
